Hi, I am wanting to reframe the existing stairway into the basement of my 1920’s-era house..It has NICE +10″risers(great for excersize maybe but not practicle) & 9″ treads(ok for code).
My ceiling in the basement is only 86″..My “thunking” is I would/should be ok w/ 7-3/4″ riser height and run w/ the 9″ treads. Is this right? It looks-like I’ll need about 99″ horz. from top tread to bottom. But I know guys routimely screw this up and I don’t want to be one of them since I am(like everyone else) on a budget of both $$ & time.
Any help(drawings/verbage) will be VERY appriciated!!
Thanks, Tony

Back at you. Post a sketch with dimensions, or even photos - would be a big help to laying this out correctly.
Thanks..I'll figure out how to work "paint"(my boy says to draw it out then attach to your reply.
Thanks again, Tony
Headroom above the treads is another thing to consider. At your house's age, you're not bound by any code, but, 6'8" is the modern minimum. I've attached a sketchup... might help you. There's a pdf if that works better.http://www.tvwsolar.com
We'll have a kid
Or maybe we'll rent one
He's got to be straight
We don't want a bent one
He'll drink his baby brew
From a big brass cup
Someday he may be president
If things loosen up
Thanks for the info... the pdf worked great, lots of help, but couldn't get the sketch to open.
Thanks again
yes, paint is good for that, but you can also just sketch a picture, and take a digital picture of your sketch, and post that. Or take a picture of the actual stairs, then post that.
I always figure the optimum stair layout at 11" tread, 7" riser. But head clearance and other issues will dictate how close to that you can come.
There are some good stair guys on board here, who can give lots of good experienced advice.View Image bakersfieldremodel.com
Would need to know the total elevation finished floor basement to finished floor above, and depth of the floor framing to be able to plot headroom
