greetings friends
Any favorite resources(books or websites) for stair building? I framed my first set of stairs, and they came out excellent, but I am definately intimidated by the whole over-the-post idea. What books have you guys read that have really helped you? In my area the craft is not appreciated, and I haven’t been able to find anyone to learn from.
thanks
stephen

Andy Engel has a new stair book out at Taunton, that has a chapter on over the post building.

Chapter 9 Over-the-Post Railings
Start with a Full-Scale Drawing
Cutting a Volute
Tenoning the Newel
Goosenecks and Quarter-Turns
Joining Easings to Rails
Attaching the Newels
Fitting the Rail
Installing Balusters
Is it 'legal and fair' here to mention that it's 30% cheaper at amazon? I hope so .. .don't mean to cause any trouble.

Coffman has an excellent guide available online or through dealers that I would recommend...also the latest issue of FHB-very good article-I picked up a few things...
The process is easier than you think...
layout baluster centres which are also post centres and rail centres...
install post at right height-one of the hardest parts IMHO
attach fittings
fit rails
have fun...if you can find someone to show you a few tricks, you'd be lightyears ahead
