Now that Black & Decker owns Porter-Cable, I’m begining to get the feeling that new product development has been put on the back burner so that more resources can be sent DeWalt’s (also owned by B&D) way.
As far as I know, the only innovative tool that Porter-Cable has introduced since the buy out is their compact belt sander. Also, they are about the only professional grade power tool manufacturer that has yet to introduce lithium-ion batteries.
Black & Decker needs to realize that Porter-Cable has a long history of high quality, innovative tools and they should throw some money their way for R&D.

Well I for one agree with you on that!
Me seems to think Porter Cable blew their RD budget on the very successful Bammer.
At least that thing(bammer) sold, you ever see that stupid air gun that they put out that was part air assisted and part self contained compressor! I never knew of anybody who ever bought one.
I saw one in my local tool store and thought it was the biggest joke, awkward as all get-out and I don't think it could fire very fast when on the self contained compressor.
tried to find a pic but no-go, maybe they destroyed them all hoping that nobody would remember!
That was also the same time that they came out with that wonderful detail sander, another huge success.
Come to think of it with these few tools mentioned maybe they decided that R&D best be left to the other tool manufactures.

Looks kind of like a Diamond on a Goats A$$.....
Cordless Nailers with On-Board CompressorsA couple of years ago, Porter Cable had a unique idea. They built a small air compressor, strapped it onto a pneumatic nailer and ran the whole thing off of a 12V battery. The idea was pretty cool, but it didn't end up working all that well for extended periods. From what I have read in forums, it appears that there were some issues with seals in the compressor and the tool itself. All that I know for certain at this time is they don't make it any longer. It happened to be somewhere around the time where DeWALT aquired Porter Cable, so many in the industry wrote it off as DeWALT wanting to promote their cordless nailers and not that there were service issues with this model. Regardless the cause, it was a cool idea at the time that isn't currently in production.

Thats the one! I've yet to see or hear of anybody that has bought one, or will admit it.

If it has an on-board compressor, what's the 1/4" male connector for?
Never saw this tool b/4, can see quickly why it wasn't a big seller. The best reward for a job well done is the opportunity to do another.

David, so that you could hook it up to a compressor and use it as a regular air tool.
Hell, isn't it obvious! It was a duo use tool but apparently the public couldn't find a single use for it!
That tool should be an embarrassment to PC, WTF were they thinking? And people make fun of the bammer - at least it worked.

yep, just never as good as they had original planned.
I mean if you put embossed lettering on the nose of the tool saying something to the effect of 'Caution: Hot' then they had to have had plans for that thing working much better than it actually did.
Someone must have that that puppy was going to tap like a machinegun.

Heart Healthy "Crock-Pot" Nutria
2 hind saddle portions of nutria meat
1 tomato, cut in big wedges
2 carrots, sliced thin
1/2 cup white wine
2 teaspoons chopped garlic
1 cup demi glace (optional)
1 small onion, sliced thin
2 potatoes, sliced thin
Brussel sprouts
1 cup water
salt and pepper to taste
Layer onion, tomato, potatoes, carrots and Brussel sprouts in crock pot. Season nutria with salt, pepper and garlic to taste and place nutria over vegetables. Add wine and water, set crock pot on low and let cook until meat is tender. Cook for approximately 4 to 6 hours. Garnish with vegetables and demi glace (4 servings).
That is just wrong.

You need to share this one over on the Cooks Talk forum. I'm sure it would start an interesting discussion.
I left out the part where ya need 3 people to stop traffic........but that's only in Texas. ;-)
Did'ja know that the Pope made the Capybara a fish? When the Brazilian 'Indios" were converted to Catholisism they had to eat fish on Friday. They wouldn't stop eating capys, so the Pope (at that time) decreed that it was a fish, so they wouldn't be in violation.
Some of our Brazilian friends told us this story while we were BBQ'ing a goat...
Interesting.
Since this thread doesn't belong in the Tavern I'll refrain from my actual drawn out answer ;-)

Luv ya Andy. You just brought me a great big jolly laugh too. Here you are lamenting the loss of the old tool companies and the way things used to be, and I have tools that are older than you are still in regular use.Heck, I even have one circ saw older than I am that gets to cut a board every now and then.;)

watch out thar whippersnapper or I'll nail your britches to your butt! ;)The saw I am thinking of was sold to me by an old timer who said it was a 1950 model. I am a 1952 model, so that would make it barely older than me.I thought they became common in the forties, but according to this they were invented in the twenties.

I have two Skil Home Shop model 520 sidewinders that I have been told were made in the late 40's. If that is true they are likely as old or slightly older than I am . (1947) 5 1/4", one is now a designated parts saw, the other I still use. Best cutting saw I have ever owned for plywood. Have a 1/3 sheet pad sander as well from the same line of tools, it and one of the saws were my dad's.

It's all schtick! all these guys confuse number of posts with things like years lived or dollars earned...;)But given the years I have worked 9-12 hour days, and the fact that I get more done than most on the job, I have probably done my requisite sixty years worth of work.

You have a picture of that saw, I didn't see any on the link?
Curious about the look of it. I have a few old trade mags, dates somewhere in the 40's and they advertise circular saws in the mag but they don't look like the ones that I use today, seam heavy by todays standards.

Your saw. Just curious what it looks like. Or do you have some link that shows the one that you have?
Some of these old tools are just cool to see. If I can find the old magazines that I have from the 40's I'd scan the pic of the saws that are advertised in them, look heavy as all get-out.
Doug
I'll see what I can do.
It is a Craftsman, all chrome looking and the handle is way up on top. I always want to grab the wrong way because it somehow looks backwards to me by comparison to modern sidewinders.

I personally think 1952 was a great year!Quite a few years ago I mentioned the name Porter Cable in Dad's presence. He told me thet a number of the tools he had used in shop class (in the 40's) had been Porter Cable.I've always been dismayed that many good names have been bought out and then sold out.
Andy
I still have my first circular saw, not older then me but at least twice as old as you!
I bought it used in about 1973-74, Milwaukee saw, still runs great and use it as my primary saw. Shortly after I bought that one I bought another one that's much older, also a Milwaukee but I don't use it, too awkward but it works fine.
BTW, enjoyed your video
Doug
agree. I like PC but it's been too long since they brought out anything new. And, they don't put out all the 'extra' stuff like DeWalt does.
