I need to refinish some exterior cedar siding[3/4 inch,1by6,vertical T&G] which is presently finished with a nasty peeling varnish like finish. The question is can I chance using a pressure wash or am I stuck mechanically sanding this mess.Any feedback would be appreciated.

You mean someone put a clear top coat on there. Ouch.
I had something similar with old leaded paint on redwood siding. Took a grinder with a rubber sanding disc, using the finest grain you can get the job done with. Actually went pretty fast once you got the hang of it. One sweep of the arms then touchup if any swirl marks.
