Remove old underlay before laminate?
I am installing laminated flooring and insulating filmunderlay. Half of the 800sq ft room is plywood sub floor the other half coverd with 1/4″ underlay and 1/8″vinyl.
The laminate floor installer has said that the 1/4″ underlay, should be removed so all is on one level before he installs the sound proofing membrane and laminate floor.
I want the future rec room in the basement to be as sound proof as possible, which the installer says the sound proofing underlayment will solve.
So, spend time removing the old underlay (25yrs old) or spend time and material adding new subfloor to bring to close the same level?
I would have thought that more mass would be better for sound proofing.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You definately want the two floors to be exactly the same level, or else you're going to see the elevation change in the finished floor. If the higher floor is structurally sound, and if you have room to add thickness to the lower floor without affecting doorways or stairs etc, then it might be easier to build up rather than tear down. The problem is going to be matching the exact height.
