I’m looking at a set of plans for a master bath remodel. It is contained within a portion of a wood frame structure about 20′ (span) wide, single story.
Architect shows the flat ceiling being removed and 2×10’s sistered to the existing 2×8 rafters.
I have not done a sister in a while. I do remember it being a bit of a struggle to get in even like size rafters. How hard is it going to be getting in 2×10’s along side these 2×8’s?
How well will they carry any more than a 2×8 once the horizontal cut is made to match them to the 2×8’s at the top plate? (HAP)
I would assume that the overall length of the rafter must be compromised or adjusted some what in order to more easily persuade it into place.
He does not spec a stuctural ridge. One outside wall of this structure is butted against another portion of the house, effectively acting as a butress so to speak.
I would have believed that there would be issues here with down forces on the outside walls.
Does this sound right??
The archy knows his stuff, I’m sure. he has designed and executed numerous public works projects. Maybe I missed something.
I know this is a favorite topic here from time to time.

I would call his office and ask him to fax you a plate and ridge detail, and ask if there are any collar ties.
I can't imagine why he would leave it off.
I KNOW I can ask HIM. Aparently, it's not needed.
I just thought this might make for some interesting conversation here. And perhaps an interesting explanation.
There remains the other toppics of discussion as well.

I always try to build a rapport with any architect who's work I'm bidding or building. Most architects prefer you contact them for questions of intent or interpretation, just as you might prefer a client question you about a job in progress, rather than inviting a bunch of guys over to look it over and discuss why you did something a certain way, for the sake of interesting conversation. Its his baby.
2x10's seem like alot of unnecessary structure? Is he specing this for roof support or insulation or ? What is the pitch? 2'centers? how bout sistereng the 2x8's and framing on 16 or 12 " centers?I'm with you seems that by the time you try to heel to your wall plate you lose all of thewidth unless you lose wall ht. or build out the wall thickness?
I didn't consider the insulation factor.
Good point, and I'm sure there would be easier ways to accomplish that.
I'm contemplating the fact that the master bedroom, having a cathedral ceiling that was part of a previous remodel, may have had a structural ridge put in when it was opened up.
