not sure if it will work for what you have or not, but when i have to remove popcorn texture from a ceiling, I wet it with a spray bottle, wait a minute or two, then take a 6" putty knife and peel the stuff off in sheets. maybe worth a try.
you may soon discover though that the textured surface was doing a great job of hiding some really bad drywall tapping and mudding.
