I need to remove an existing cheap spec house dryer vent hood that is totally gone in less than 7 years THe existing vent hood is a one piece and I bought what appears to be a more durable 2 peice one. I may be able to install the flange by just removing what appears to be j channel framing the existing dryer hood but having a hard time with this, is there a trick to removing j-channel? Also if I have to remove the surrounding siding is there a tool or trick to removing it? The vent is located about 3 courses from the bottom of the siding. Thought this was gonna be an easy fix but then again if it was easy I would not be here asking questions.
Thanks
Dan

Malco makes a siding "unzipper" available at Lowes..and the J channel is nailed (hopefully) and a small "weenie bar" or mini-wonderbar is helpful there. Careful, if it's cold, it's brittle and can crack.

Seriously Folks, I need a home for 3 lovers of your life.
Start at the course above the vent. try to grab a corner of a pc. with either a zip tool made for this purpose or a mini pry bar. sometimes I can just grab it with my finger, then pull down, you then should be able to unzip that pc. from the one below. I try to do this above 50 degrees or wait untill the sun hits it. Its brittle when cold
good tips, kinda cool here today, good excuse for not doing it today.
Thanks
Dan
To remove the Jchannel, pull.
The unzipper tool will really help you in putting it all back together. Its cheap and a worthy addition to any tool box.
Thanks, however if everything goes right i shouldnt have to put the j channel back on, the new hood should fit over the siding...... guess that is another question, does anyone know if I will need to do any caulking?
