RemovingTile on Backerboard?

| Posted in General Discussion on February 6, 2004 06:02am

Hey Everybody!  I’ve got a quick question on removing tile.  I’ve been remodeling for 10 years and have removed countless tons of old mortar beds but never tile on backerboard.  I’ve got to remove about 350 sq ft of floor tile that is installed over 5/8 subfloor and then 1/4 inch backerboard (Hence the reason the job is failing).  I’m going to re-enforce the framing (currently 2×10 spanned 16ft), overlay the subfloor, install new 1/4 backer and new tile.

I’m at a loss as to the best method of removal.  The old mortar beds simply break up but with the backerboard adhered to the subfloor, I’m not sure how to approach it.  Any thoughts??

Thanks in Advance.

Eric

All the air chisels I have seen are small, less then 2 inches wide and seem to be designed for lighter duty use.  Is there another version out there - kind of like a mini jack hammer I suppose?

The doors aren't quite big enough for the heavy equipment although maybe they make an attachment for the truly mini excavators!!  The explosives might work but we might need to put up heavier plastic to control the dust:)

Thanks again for ya'lls help.  Any other thought would be appreciated.

Go rent a chipping hammer. Bosch has some roatery hammers that will make short work of that tile. Look for a SDS Max about a 1-9/16 spline..

There a few here to help with the explosives if you get that far....

Couple of extra layers of 8mil should be fine....
