20 year old deck, 2×6 scabbed decking that I want to replace. 2×10’s are ok. Would the 2×10’s (20) last longer if I cut some rubber roof into strips and covered the top of 2×10 before decking (or painted the 2×10), or am I pathetically cheap? Franz

are the joists pressure treated?
if they are not then i would replace them.
painting is a bad idea for decks that have alot of exposure because it will actualy trap moisture.
peel and stick flashing can help
(like moiststop) but it is fairly expensive and when you put your decking down you will be putting a hundred little holes in it.
what is your location?

Sure, pressure treated, and I'm in upstate NY. Franz
re read my reply about peel and stick.
20 year old pressure treated may or may not have another 20 years left.
What are you going to be installing for decking?
If it is cedar then i wouldnt replace the joiusts, if it is a composite like timber tech than i might consider it.(replacing joists)
Ive seen pressure treated lumber rot out in the center from water getting in at the deck screws and nails.
20 2x10x10 would be would be around 180$ here so if questionable id just replace.
If you give more detail you'll get better results.
Where are you? Some climates would require a joist change out if they aren't treated (or are in otherwise poor condition).
How far off the ground is your deck? What direction does it face? Does any roof water drain or drip on it? etc.

I erased original message I think. I want to replace 2x6 scabbed decking on 20 year old deck. 2x10 treated joists are ok. Will covering the 2x10s with strips of rubber roof or painting joists make then last longer. Deck covers a roof with slight degree slope towards an interior drain. Deck is about 2 feet off roof. Just rain, no extra splash. West face, trees overhang. FranzEdited 4/12/2008 4:32 pm ET by franz kafka
