reno question – HW flooring issue
So I have a $190,000 reno project underway – ripping and tearing is done and I’m getting ready to do all my rough-ins – including prepping the floor for hardwood.
So here’s the issue. 1970’s house here in Revelstoke BC – the sub floor in 3/4 ship-lap that is in great shape, well laid and well fastened – not worried about it. On top of this the original owners glued down vinyl tiles – whole house.
Finished product for the bedrooms will be carpet, so the tiles will be under the underlay.
But the remaining 700 square is HW. How should I address the tiles? Here’s what I’m planning:
– pretend I didn’t see the tiles.
– skin the remaining 700 with 1/4 ply.
– glue it and stapled it.
Smart? Dumb?
I could use an ice scrapper and dig up the tiles but I’m almost certain they have asbestos either in their make up or certainly in the glue. So I really don’t want to got there.

The added thickness of the tiles and luan is going to affect how far into the underlayment the nails will go. Might be enough of a difference to induce loose nails and squeeks.
Was the presence of the tiles known when the job was bid? If it were my house, and you were doing a 200k remodel and intentionally ignored this "feature", I would be p!ssed for not having it properly addressed. At the least, I would want to be the one to make the decision to leave it in place.
