I’m about to staple down some kitchen floor underlayment — luan — and I can rent the staple gun, hose, and pancake air compressor (all Bostich for $65 a day). I’m considering buying the compressor and hose, not the gun, since I won’t need the gun again for this, but I might like a brad nailer as I start doing other work. Anybody have bad experiences?

The recipe for linoleum hasn't changed much in nearly 170 years, yet it's still one of the greenest floors money can buy.

This is a no-brainer. Buy. You can usually almost find package deals, either PC or Bostich, with a pancake, hoses and fittings, and usually a 18 ga brad nailer, for about $200. That's less than4 days rent. You will be surprised what uses you'll find for the tools. I have a narrow stapler, and it doesn't get used much. When I build bookcaes and other furniture it gets some use fastening the plywood backs. Also very useful for upholstering the dining room chairs afgter the dog chews them.
I'm sorry, I thought you wanted it done the right way.

We use 7/16" crown staple on BC underlayment. Luan is a little soft for it but works fine with BC. One every 6". Occasionally we his a water line. Ads excitement to the week when that happens. :-) DanT

My flooring guy insisted on it. And lots of them.
The first 90 percent of a project takes 90 percent of the time. The last 10 percent takes the other 90 percent of the time.
Seemed like they'd blow half way through and not be able to do what they are there for, then require lots of floor levelor compound. Screws or underlayment anils leave a cleaner surface and hold better. Gotta do lots, no matter what fastener used. Can't let that stuff have a chance to get up and dance, ya know?

I'd just hammer in some ring shank flooring nails by hand every 4" unless you're talking about a really big kitchen.
Luan? Check your thinset instructions, most that I've seen specifically say Do Not Use On Luan.
Don't think he ever mentioned that the underlayment was for tile.
I agree - luaun means lousy underlayment in Indonesian
