I am in the process of repairing the rust on the steel lintels above the doors and windows of a brick house. I have found the “Rust Converter” product from Gemplers catalog to be very effective at converting the rust on the lintels so that the lintels can be painted with enamel paint. There are hairline cracks in the mortar joints above the lintels. Repointing seems unnecessary, but it seems like I should do something. Should I caulk this area?

craig, The rust and cracks may be a sign that you have some separation of the brick from the framing. At the very least keep your eye on it. If metal ties were used ( a pretty good bet) they may have rusted to. Don't do any thing that would mask further movement. Skip
