REPLACE EXISTING VINYL WITH A PAINTABLE
the exterior of my home is finished with vinyl siding. this was installed upon a layer of 1″ high R , the original cedar clappboard and homosote sheathing. i would like to replace this finish with a paintable fascia, soffit, trimwork and a clappboard siding.
i am looking for advise for the best methods for accomplishing this task. i am concerned about potential moisture problems for painting. what should i look out for? what would be the best products to use for this project.
thank you,
john

Vinyl is paintable. Use a premium paint that lists vinyl as an appropriate substrate.
Otherwise fiber-cement is the only game in town in most areas. Tempered hardboard is another option but availability is very limited.
FWIW Sherwin Williams "Resilience" and "SuperPaint" exterior grade paints have Vinylsafe that allows you to paint the vinyl a darker color than present and offers a 25 year warranty.
Otherwise, cement composite for the siding, BC ply for the soffits and Miratec or clean 1x (primed on all six sides) for the facia is a viable long-term installation.

If you are intending to replace this vinyle, then Hardiboard is the rage this week
