I have a canister light (the type where the can is above the ceiling) that I would like to replace with a hanging lamp. Does anyone make a conversion kit? Are there any code issues?

How badly do you want to "save" the ceiling?
You can disassemble the can light from the inside and then get to the connections.
Then install fan box and support. They will install through the hole and expand to lock between the joist.
Then hang you light.
However, most can lights take a much larger hole so you will need an oversize trim ring.
is there an attic above the can?
Bill Hartmanns idea will work, if the cans junction box isn't in the way of using an expandable bracket,
also the feed might not be long enough
The can is in the ceiling between between floors. If it is like the ones in the attic I think it has an attached junction box so taking it out would be messy. I was hoping someone made an adapter that would allow the the can to stay in place since it is structurally attached and the wires are already there.
Thanks
Like Bill Hartmann stated, there is a bracket you can use, and that might work ,if the existing J-box is not in the way, and you are able to do most the work with one hand along with many cuts ans scrapes. It will leave you with a patch job around the old opening There may not be enough slack or free movement in whatever (romex or conduit) has been used to feed the old can. although you could use the whip from the can itself, if you do use a bracket and new box , the junction box on the can is now inaccessible, and you have lost the bondIf you are asking about an adapter that just utilizes the existing can socket, I have to say that I have not seen anything like that. The can itself is designed to allow only a few different types of lamps, and a variety of trims, and not the weight of a ceiling mounted fixture.I
OK ,it's after 8:30 I 'm going to the Tavern"
I figured that if you use the expandable bracket and fan box, which you can install from finish side, that you can uninstall it if needed. But I have never tried it.Thus if the orginal line is too short you can put in a junction box up in the ceiling. Not perty, but them rework often isn't.
The bracket could work, if that can j-box does not butt up against a joist ,but it would conceal a j-box
He still has to extend the bonding jumper from the splices of the can. to what ever he does."
Thanks for the advice. I guess I'll find out when I tear into it.
