Replacing second floor in garage

So I have a garage with old rotting 1×6 for the floor. The joists are 2×12 rough cut and I have a metric boatload of 2x4s that I have no use for (came with the house when I bought it). I was wondering if I can replace the 1×6 flooring with stud grade 2x4s as flooring instead after making sure the joists are sound. Is there any drawback here that I am missing?

Square edges will have some cracks showing at some point. Install will be difficult. Other than that maybe not such a bad idea if the job won't need inspecting.
Hmmm I hadn't considered that codes might have a problem with it. I didn't know there were codes against over building something haha.
Hmmm... Traditional subflooring is tongue and groove so loads are shared with adjacent boards/ sheathing. 2x4 are narrower than typical subfloors so it would be difficult for a load to only be on a single "board" but the load per board won't be uniform with adjacent boards. Add a spline and groove and you're back in business.
