A photo and better description of the job would help. Stucco over CMU? Over frame? Type of window - wood frame, aluminum, steel casement? Masonry frame (flanged) or nail up (finned)?
Sometimes it's better to remove the windows from the interior, redoing the interior trim details. Sometimes what you think is a window unit locked in with the stucco is just held in with screws through the frame and a quick swipe with a utility knife at the stucco/window frame junction will release the entire frame. The stucco was never placed over the frame, just up to it.
Sometimes the window units are wood frame with the parting strip separating the double hung sashes. There are replacement inserts that fill the frame after you remove the interior stop, the interior sash, the parting strip and the exterior sash. The insert, complete with the new sashes, is placed from the inside against the exterior stops of the frame and then the old (or new) interior stops are replaced.
Last year I replaced two 4-0x2-0 windows with 4-0x3-6 in stucco. I ordered Z frames that are designed for stucco reto-fits. The exterior flange eliminates the need for stucco repair. Use care when cutting and removing the old windows so the stuuco doesn't crack. Randy
Brandon IIRC there was a very detailed article about replacing windows in stucco in the journal of light construction about 6 months ago. Perhaps their website might have info or access to the article. Good Luck. Jay
