Our plumber has become a friend. In addition to replumbing our bathroom, which really needs it and for which we will pay him, he is eager to replace the brand new copper supply piping (installed last January) in our unfinished basement with Viega, which was just approved for code in our state. He says it will last forever–unlike copper–and has offered to do this work for free. We will pay only for the materials. Should we take him up on his offer, or stick with the copper piping?

Where you at, might fill out your profile so that people will know what area your from.
Oh, and welcome to BT.
The reason that I ask where your from is that in some places copper does have a short life, others it last forever(almost).
I'm not a plumber and never heard of viega so I cant offer anything regarding that.
Enlighten me on the viega
Doug
We are in Rhode Island. I guess I could research what the local water does (or doesn't do) to copper piping. I googled Viega--I get the feeling it's a flexible plastic piping, obviously I need to find out from the plumber. He did say that one of its benefits is that it has some "give" and won't break as readily as copper in a freeze situation. That doesn't really concern us, though. Our basement isn't susceptible to freezing.
It is a type of PEX.

"He says it will last forever--unlike copper--"
What reason does he have to say this.
There are some places with agressive waters that "eat" copper.
But in most places coper pipe will last a long time.
I would not put any money on either one lasting FOREVER!
Hmm. Good question, and thanks for the link to Viega. We replaced our rusting cast iron waste line with PVC, which is also supposed to last forever. But who knows? And who knows about PEX? Also, after visiting the Viega site, I'm wondering if I want to consume water from plastic tubing. Copper is an ingredient in multivitamins, so it's probably okay...
Well I am a plumber Viega is just another company going after wirsbos' lead on the market.
It is pex piping ---polyethylene crosslinked.
Best warranty on pex I have seen is 25yrs.
Copper pipe has 50yr warranty.
Water conditions have effect on copper -it doesn't like acids & chlorine ( green hair ) syndrome.
& if memory serves me correctly didn't PB ( polybutalene ) say it was the pipe forever. How did that class action lawsuit go anyways? LoL
If it ain't broke how much do you want to pay me to fix it?
Thanks--concrete info. This is just what I was hoping/looking for. This is my first dicussion group of any kind. I'm glad I joined.
Sounds bogus to me. Who works for free? I think that you should stick to what you have. Your choice. Luck.
