i read an interesting thread about unsafe wiring
i see unsafe wiring all the time as i’m sure many of you do
i always tell the homeowner usually in writing sometimes not
how do you handle it?
should we report stuff like this to the utilities?
are we as contractors who recognize unsafe stuff liable? some of the gas and electrical stuff i see are scary
caulking is not a piece of trim

I ussually point unsafe conditions out to the home owner, and note it in a final report with a lein release that I give them. If it interfears with the work I am doing or must be corrected to complete my work, I issue a change order with a correction order to the HO. Work pretty much stops untill we agree on the fix and cost of the fix.
All electrical problems are taken care of by a licensed electrictian, and gas piping by a master plumber. My insurance does not cover me in those areas. If the HO takes care of the problem or hires thier own people, I get a signed release of liability from all parties.
I have never had a problem with a home owner not wanting something corrected, once they know what the potentials are. I keep my building code book and NEC in my truck all the time, and share the information with the HO. Telling Mr. HO is not a porblem this way.
The only violations that I turn into the utility company are issues that they need to correct on thier side of the meter, or theft of service.
