I have a 16×24 family room with a fireplace in the middle of one of the 24 foot walls. Ceiling height is 8 feet and to add coziness to the room we dropped the ceiling down 9 inches around the room for a width of 24 inches except over the fire place. Inside the drop we have fancy crown and dentil molding. Over the fire place(for 4 feet either side of the centerline of the fireplace), we curved the boxed-in-ceiling drop to nothing at the center point and brought it in 6 inches — so at the center of the firepalce you have this gradual graceful sweep that focuses the eye on this area of the room.
Here’s the question: we wanted to add to this area by covering this area with copper. We are also designing a new mantle that will have the manlet itself coverd with copper and have 4 halogen (the very narrow lights that are 3/4’s of an inch thick) up-lighting form the mantle. We are having second thoughts on the copper for the ceiling portion due to the fact that it will eventually get tarnished (evne with a protectant) and a curved flat surface may not have the impact that we want — something that is artsy aht is truly eye-catching.
What other materials could we use or art type of work that would create a WOW! Factor?
We’ll take all suggestions —- thanks and all the best in the new year —
