I have to find a new plasterer for my own home, and I don’t really know much about plaster. We have already rocked the walls with 1/2″ bb, and have the plaster and bead materials on-site so materials and board are not in the equation. I’ve talked with a couple of plasterers, but am getting wide spreads, with the high end about twice the low.
Anyone have any good questions to ask plasterers, to help me intelligently differentiate between the good and the bad? Does anyone know the difference between a thin-coat and a base coat approach? Do I need a base coat over 1/2″ bb? In a thin-coat application, how many passes should I expect a plaster to do? I’ve got one guy saying three passes (joint, and then two passes in alternate directions) is the way to go. Any opinions?
What about people’s opinion of using a smaller outfit (where the owner does the work) vs. a group who usually does “million dollar homes” (i.e. large developments), where the owner isn’t necessarily the one doing the work.
I know there are no guarantees with plaster, as plaster can crack for a variety of reasons, but I do want to make sure I make the best choice, because my worst nightmare is visible joints in a prominent run. Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.
