I’m trying to help my sister get a feel for what she should expect her reroof to cost. She’s outside Philly (she said “lower Montgomery County” if that helps). My roofing experience is in the South and Colorado, and I did a lot more hammering than estimating, so I don’t have a feel for what its like up there (in PA), or what it might cost.
The roof is a simple gable with a single small dormer on each side and a brick chimney at each end. The lowest point of the gable is two stories up, and the pitch looks to be 10/12 or 12/12 from pictures. The roof is currently slate, but unfortunately won’t be replaced with slate ($$$). They’ll likely want a good quality architectural shingle.
I’m not really hoping anyone can give me an exact price since I don’t have any specifics, but what would you expect ballpark per square. Where I’ve worked, we didn’t rig safety lines but I don’t know what things are like in PA. What does that add to the costs? What would the costs be for slate removal and disposal? What other costs am I forgetting?
Thanks!
-Rich

Have her call Becker Roofing of Norristown/Audobon/King of Prussia. I used to run the crew and now my brother does. Have done LOTS of work similar in the area, slate tears, shingle on slate tears, yadda yadda. Now I'm a trim carp but Bruce Becker'll give a fair price. Depending on the conditions it might be pricey as it is a messy job. Plus it may require a sheathing job unless the slates are on old planking. What is the condtion of the guttering? I would recommend Certainteed shingles but GAF or Elk are good as well.
I live in Montgomery Country (lower merion). Bala Cynwyd to be precise. The area roofer I would recommend is Katona roofing. They do a lot of work in the area, and are very professional, clean and fast. You can contact them at (610) 664-9600. I used them about 2 years ago and recommended them to two or three others. All were happy with the price and the results.
Rich,
This very weekend there is a home show at the Ft Washington Expo Center which is not far from her if she's in Lower Montgomery County. it will give her a chance to talk to a few people who are in the area.
Bothof the roofers mentioned to you in other posts aare reputable local operations if that helps.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'll pass on the names. I am still interested in any ballpark figures people might be able to throw out.As for the homeshow, my sister's about a week shy of 9 months pregnant, so I think walking around a convention center is out. Thanks for the tip though.
