I have been working as a Framing carpenter with another guy for two years and he has now decided to get out of the business. I got licensed and insured as a subcontractor for tax reasons and also to get a “taste” of what working for myself would be like.
I now have the opportunity to take over all of the contracts that he is “giving” away, however he will not volunteer any pricing information.
I am afraid to bid too low/high for obvious reasons. I have all of the tools and have two other carpenters who are willing to come on board for $500 a week. I figure a laborer will cost me $400 a week.
I would like to know what other Framing Contractors are getting per square foot and what they are getting for extras suched as arched openings, door and window installations, etc.
Thanks to all who respond!

John - if you are serious about bein' in business, you need to start developing the ability to bid work. Get a print, take a good hard look, and try to figure out how long it will take you and your crew to do it. Once you get a job, keep a daily log. It won't take long before you are seeing where you are making and losing money.
Become a student of your profession, that's the surest road to success. Analyze your methods. Be honest in the evaluation of your crew. Try to recognize what each worker does best and utilize their strengths. Stick with it, not many can. - jb
