I am in the process of getting ready to install a security system in my house and have not had too much luck getting info by looking in the usual places. What I’m looking for is not a monitored system but, something that an advanced DIYer can install. If anyone has any info on products or can point me in the right direction, that would be great.
Thanks in advance,
Will

Will - Security systems come in the easier to install 'wireless' and the hardwired. If you are comfortable drilling through lots framing to window and door jambs, running wire adjacent to tack strips and moulding, then I'd vote for this system. One place that has all the materials and info you need is Radioshack. Buy a controller unit for a closet, run wire to windows and doors and for motion detectors. Security wire is 2 or 4 strand 20 or 22 gauge. Magnetic switches are what you connect to the wire (in jamb) with a magnet in the adjacent door or window sash. All connections should be soldered and taped. Wire it up placing same-zone magnetic switches in Series, plug the controller transformer into an outlet and you're set.
*Will- I have installed many systems (for a company and on my own). I would say get a hardwired system, if you have good access above and below the first floor to fish wires. You'll need a 3/8" d'versibit (long flexible drill bit, 48" is good) to get through headers and such. I suggest getting an FBII (Fire Burglary Instruments Inc.) controller and keypad (like an xl-3)...depends on how many doors and windows you have to protect. A company called William B. Allen in New Orleans sells all the stuff you need at wholesale cost. A MUCH better way to go than Radio Shack. They ship only COD, which adds about $5 to shipping. Always had great luck with them.

You might also try http://www.x10.com for a system that works over high frequency through household wiring.

If you intend to have your system monitored you should consider having that company do the installation. They often have introductory offers of minimum installations that are quite reasonable. Add-ons are not outrageous. They like to monitor their own installations. Their installers work miracles in hiding wiring.

I usaed to design and sell security systems. Now do remodeling.First off ,I recommend having a system professionally installed if possible. The quality of the components are far superior.Less false alarms...which is very important.Next, consider a monitered system unless your neighbors are home when you aren't and they can be trusted to call the police( this is where false alarms come into play...the whole boy cries wolf thing).Let your neighbors know you have a system and what it sounds like and who you need THEM to call.DON"T BUY from Guardian or any company that offers free or discounted systems that "REQUIRE" a monitering contract.(notice I recommend the monitering, but NOT if required with a long term contract). These systems consist of a front door/back door plunger and a central hall motion dectector. If I know this so does every thief!Motions only are effective when pets can't trigger false alarms. Some can be adjusted, but never very well.A good system is a Full Perimeter System.Every door /window and point if access is armed.Wireless is the way to go.I used to sell both wireless and hardwired.Wireless is more flexable and less prone to false alarms(no wires to pinch/short out.)Batteries are more expensive, though.Get long life lithium ,and keep them fresh.Tie a fire system to the alarm.Firm systems save more lives than burglar alarms.Follow local regulations..the Fire Dept. will send out someone to design at no charge!Use smokes throught home and heat sensors in areas near furnace and laundry.High humidity (laundry)is tough on smokes and affect lifespan.(most will recommend heat sensors...some detect a preset temp. and others detect a quick rise in temp. degrees).Plan well.Put out signs.Trim hedges around access points.Walk peremiter of home as burglar at evening and nite and see where you would try!Mount motion lights. The whole idea is to stop them before they get in....not let you know they ARE in as the discount guys(Guardian,etc.)do. As far as I'm conserned those types should be outlawed! So ...go quality as budget allows,Full Perimeter,Neighbors cooperate,Signs,Lights,Bushes,FIRE SYSTEM,need any help e-mail me.....used to work for Rollins Protective Services-one of the better...there are others to consider also...ask alot of questions.
