Information I've been getting suggests the first run of base beams be below grade on gravel.
I'm about to embark on a similar project but not quite as ambitious as yours.

*Hi Jim,Ideally, you should be below grade on the first two runs and over a bed of gravel. The backfilled side should have a drainage pipe inbedded in crushed stone and backfilled with sand or gravel so as to not trap water.I don't know the climate your in or the type soil on your property, so I can't be too specific.Gabe
