Retractable screen

cmcguire1 | Posted in General Discussion on November 5, 2006 03:21am

Morning.
DW interested in installing a retractable screen on double inswing Eagle french doors that lead from our kitchen to a deck.
Location is Cape Cod, MA-so we only need the screen for a couple months each year-but heavy use in those months.
Lots of companies out there, Phantom, Mirage, Larson…
Anyone have any experience with any of these products?
Thanks
Chris

I lived with one for a few months, brand unknown.

Not something you would want to go in and out of more than once a day.

It was a good fit, kept the bugs out & let air in, but not practical as a doorway.

      Thanks for the feedback.
Were the doors in question used frequently? or only occasionally.
My question really leads to a durability judgement.

with my experience the brand HD currently carries lasted less than a weekend. the previous brand they carried was only slightly better.  i have had 1 replaced with the phantom and as far as i know its still operating fine and durring the warmer days is used several times a day.  that house has 2 singels and 1 double.  when i installed the double it was missing 1 small part.  i called them and they had it to me within a couple of days.  one of the only times i remember dealing with a product problem on something and having no isssues getting it solved.   The current screen  has yet to be repalced but will recieve a phantom too.  now adays though they can only be installed by a certified installer.

I've installed one or two, go on easily, seem to work ok, but could possibly get worn out quickly.  Brand unknown, HO purchased at HD.

Thought about one for my own front door and thought better of it.

i intalled a pair from HD this summer and so far so good.  during the summer, we left the right hand side in a permanently shut position (the kits come with a stop for this purpose), so on a day to day we were only opening and closing the left side.  unlike one of the other respondents, i do not find the open/shut action difficult.  also, now that we are in cold season, we retract both sides.  not having screen obstruct our view is great.  lots of compliments from guests, and we are happy.  hope this helps.
