retrofit double glazed glass in old wind
I have a large fixed window 55 3/4 by 79 with single pane glass that I would like to
fit with double glazed glass. it would save me money and I would be able to keep
the look of the window built in 1941.Can this be done, and what would the quality of
the glass inserts be.
thanks

I can be done. For ordering the glass, all you have to do is give the glass shop measurements and they'll make one up. They'll ask the thickness, too. Since you aren't trying to match an existing thickness, go with their recommendation. What you'll get is a two sheets of glass sealed together as a double pane unit.
I'm assuming your frame is wood, and that all you'll need to do is rework the trim to fit the thicker glass.
I suspect the quality control may not be as good as a large national window fabricator, but I've had a handfull of custom windows made for me and none have failed yet.
Something that large would be difficult to handle. Make sure you have the handling figured out. The suction cups that glaziers use are a big help. Maybe they'll deliver and install.
where are you located? If it's in SLC Ut I have a excellent source to supply you.

Don't forget to check diagonals to make sure the existing frame hasn't sagged out of square.
I would try to check the brand name first.
For instance, if it is aa Andersen, they can likelyu make the fit for you out of stock.
Excellence is its own reward!
Is the window leaky? If you feel drafts around the window, the pane is not the problem.
I would just guess that the payback period for such an upgrade would be approx. forever, or longer than that new double pane will hold its seal.
How about an inside storm or an appropriate outside storm?
