How possible would it be to retrofit an old fireplace to get outside air for combustion? Seems to me a couple of carefully placed core drilled holes might do the trick. One horizontal from the outside and another vertical from the front of the firebox floor to intersect the horizontal one? Any thoughts?

I retrofitted an old coal-burning fireplace to a wood-burning one, with 3/4 black pipe to improve combustion, thru the exterior wall. It's important to place the opening in front of the fireplace for the draft,an important consideration. It works well, but be sure toplace a vented mushroom cap over the opening to avoid soot clogging. For more info,Taunton has an excellent book on chimneys and fireplaces.
Jackplane,
Just 3/4" ? Not knowing any better one way or another, I was thinking it had to be much bigger than that.
