Looking for some advise relating to retrofitting pocket doors in place of hinged.
Separating my living room and dining room there used to be French doors. They are long gone as evidenced by the patina of the old hinge mortises.
As I mentioned, they were hinged doors. The house is very small so space is at a premium. I would like those doors back but I was thinking a better solution may be pocket doors.
The opening dimension is 60″ across and each side is wide enough to hold a 30″ door. My main question is related headers. It is a non load bearing wall.
Would it be necessary to install a header in a non load wall once I’m into the wall and determine that I need to remove any studs to complete the Pocket door install?
FYI…Each side wall is approx 42″ wide.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Kevin, for starters, use Google, type in "Johnson Pocket Door" and hit search.
Since you're gonna be tearing out the wall to each side of the existing opening, and you're gonna have the old header just hanging there by the sheetrock or plaster, I'd suggest you remove the old header and frame in a new one of proper length with proper end supports. With some luck, you can do this from one side of the wall, so that you'll not need to disturb trim, cabinets, or whatever on the far side.
Good luck, Steve
