I’ve been contracted to replace the old aluminum frame windows in a pair of four-plex’s with vinyl siding. Since I have never installed vinyl siding, I’m planning on using retrofit frame vinyl windows. How do I remove the existing window without disturbing the exterior finish?

Greetings dan,
This post, in response to your question, will bump the thread through the 'recent discussion' listing again.
Perhaps it will catch someone's attention that can help you with advice.
If it's not too late, posting some closeup pics of the windows in question would help matters greatly.
Cheers
"The old Quaker Meeting house is almost 300 years old and as my sawzall made its way into the pegged ancient wood, a smell emerged that told me about dried, cracked things. The ancient Quakers sitting in the well worn pocket of their silence on the darkened pine benches were whispering something to me across the years. Something about why I was here, why we're here. Lord but it was hot. I reached in to clear anything out of what was the sill, nothing but the hardened mud, lime and sand mortar, dust and shadows." -- Jer
Pull the interior trim and window sashes. Find out how the frames are attached, pull any screws that are holding the window in place, then cut the frame in the middle of each piece and pry it out.
Vinyl siding is a walk in park, is something does happen a fix will not be impossible.
What's wrong with me? I could ask you the exact same thing.
i'm not sure what kind of aluminum windows you are talking about, or how they were installed, but if they have a flange on the outside, and were installed from the outside, then i can't see any way around messing with the vinyl...luckily, they make a nice tool for pulling siding apart...can't remember the exact name...we always called it the 'zip tool'...i'd check with a direct siding supplier, cause its kind of a specialty tool...
i could be wrong, maybe somebody here knows more about how these aluminum frame windows are installed...
Remove the existing sashes. If your lucky they are both operational. If not, the fixed pane will only come out by breaking it.
After the sashes are removed, carefully pry the aluminum frame away from the plaster cut with sawsall. Remove frame.
Total time about 3 minutes. No exterior siding work, or interior trim work needed.

that would be a first for me...removing an old window without any interior or exterior work...in a finished house...
where do i find these gravy jobs? lol...
I've replaced a few thousand windows, and I'd say 90% of them didn't need interior or exterior trim work. Most of the time the only interior trim work is removing/reinstalling the stops on old wooden double hungs.
