Are there any special techniques you guys use to retrofit skylights (velux) in a cedar shake roof deck? I don’t run in to too many cedar shake roofs down here (NC) and have never put a skylight into one. Thanks for your help.

It's pretty much the same as an asphalt shingle roof. One step per course.
Good Luck

Not exactly one step per course. Their flashings are about eight inches long and the shakes expose teninches to the weather. Doubleup.Excellence is its own reward!
Or it could be a impractical. The age or condition of the shakes will be a factor.
It will definately not be a walk in the park relative to retrofitting skylites on an asphalt roof. But essentially the same process.

Good point.
Velux provides different flashing kits for various roofing materials. make sure you get the right one and you shouldn't have any trouble. Also, peel away more roofing than you would like to and provide 12-18" of bituthene or ice & watershield(inexpensive peace of mind)Good luck

The Ice and water shield is a must, because of the thickness of the shakes will not allow ths step flashings to sit tight on top fo each other. This leaves a nice little channel for wind blown rain or snow melt backup to find its way inside
You may also consider using some plastic roof cement between the layers of step flashing and shakes. Do a neat job with and it will not show.
Hopefully the original installer did not make any errors that will ruin your day!
Also with Velux skylights "when in doubt read the directions!!! " they are very complete and are they best way to check up on yourself.

I use a 2"x 6" box for cedar shake roofs to give a higher box for the thicker shake. The standard Velux box is not high enough, nor their flashing kit to clear the shake.
Jim Blodgett gave an excellent installation guide in FHB No.141 Page 94 issue Sept . 2001.but that was for a comp roof.
With a shake roof you do everything the same except you peel back the shake using a flatbar and long screwdriver to pull the staples or nails from underneath about 3 shakes back on each side of the skylight box.
