How would you go about retrofitting some sort of stringer/trim to these stairs to cover the gaps under the nosing? The stairs lead to a finished basement, but were finished as an after-thought. Is there some way to take a 12′ long board, tack it above the stairs, and then scribe to fit without removing the carpet?
The wall to the left is drywall over concrete, the wall to the right is minimally framed, also against concrete.
Also, any recommendations on the top riser for nosing? The current thought is to cut back the tile floor and remove the tile riser, add a new riser and mill an oak nosing to fit.
The owner’s child fell on the way up the stairs and cracked their head on the tile.
Any thoughts or ideas? Thanks.

You can cut decorative stringers by making a paper pattern off the stairs. But doing so without removing the carpet is just adding one muck-up on top of the one that's already been completed -- just another "afterthought".
The tile plan sounds right, but if it wuz me, I'd just pull up the carpet, remove the tile from the riser, build & install the stringers, re-carpet the stairs including the top riser, and install the oak nosing last to overlap the carpet a bit. Installing the carpet after the stringers are in will help hide any less-than-perfect scribing.

Everything fits, until you put glue on it.
Thanks. I was hoping to get away with leaving the carpet in place, but you're right; it would be more accurate if it was removed.

I even got paid for it when FH ran it in Tips and Techniques last year.

Looks like a keeper, thanks. I remember reading that thread, but none of the details. I think I'll cut the nosings off, as others have suggested.
