I’m working with a client on renovating a small vacation cottage. It was built in the 1950’s using 2×3 studs. The exterior is covered with asbestos siding and is not being touched. I initially thought about furring out the 2×3’s and using 3 1/2″ R-13 kraft face fiberglass. But after we demo’d the interior and exposed the studs, we found that the studs were not evenly spaced but varied from 6″ to 22″ with none on 16 or 24″ centers. Since cutting and piecing the fiberglass along with having to fur out all the studs would be very labor intensive, does anyone have any comments or experience using rigid foam instead of fiberglassin a similar application? The cottage is located at the NJ shore and will not be used in December, January or February.

You might want to check into sprayed in icynine (sp?). Or you could add horizonal 1x strapping on the inside and have dense wet-blown cellulose put in. The cellulose would probably be less expensive. Or just have the dense pack blown in the way it is, since you don't use the place in the winter.

This is a perfect situation for spraying urethene foam, because it is closed cell and will not hold water or let water penetrate beyond it.
Hasbeens suggestion of the horizontal strapping and mooneywall cellulose fill is good too, especially for economy, but it would hold water if the siding let any water in at all, promoting rot.
Since this is on the shore and probably no rainscreen wall system I would definitely NOT use icy. It is open celled foam and will hold water a long time
