I recently read an article on this site about PEX tubing, my question is, does anyone have experience with rodents chewing through this stuff? I have had two experiences with varmints getting in behind appliances and chewing a hole through the water supply line to ice makers and I wondered if this product uses anything in manufacturing that might be perceived as tasty by these pesky critters? By the way, soy based wiring insulation and firewall sound deadening material is definitely a bad idea in my area as well, countless 1000 dollars repair bills testify to that…

it's not the plastic they're after, they are trying to "eat" the air bubbles in the line, we had this problem in the sugar bush with squirrels till we figured it out. If they can't see it they won't eat it, anyway, ice makers should always have a copper line ..
Thanx for that, I agree with the copper supply, that was my remedy for the problem, I didn't do the original install, just dealt with the issue and the damage that resulted. The reason I suspected the content of material was that I also involved in a major repair in a house where critters got into space between floors and stripped romex down to bare wire including nibbles into the positive which I am sure they regretted. They (critters) actually had enlarged drilled holes in joists to access next bays. Was told by supplier that wire sheath and insulation contained soy products that has been since discontinued. The PEX tubing appeals to me but didn't want to create similar problems down the road.
Thanks again for your input.
Rats and mice will chew thru anything, they do it if they are looking for water and they do it to keep their teeth short; their teeth never stop growing. If you have problems with mice I wouldn't use pex.
