Hello – I have visited here many times and received some great ideas from the discussions you all have had. Now I finally have a question of my own.
I have been asked to include in a home that I am designing a special “screened-in” porch. They want the screens to roll up out of the way when not in use. They don’t want the view spoiled when the bugs aren’t around.
Do you folks know of anything like this? OR Know of anyone that can provide it? OR Have any thoughts on how it would be designed?
Thanks for your help.
Regards,
Robert

Robert,
I can't think of how you could have the screens roll up and still keep the bugs out when rolled down. The edges are not going to seal.
You could hinge the screens at the top and have them lift up to the ceiling. My parents cottage had windows like that in the front room. There was a couple of pulleys so one could pull the window up with a rope from the side of the window. When down, you unclip the rope and pull it to the ceiling so it isn't in the way.
That system lent a lot of flavor to the atmosphere.
Just a thought.

*Maybe you could build a grid that would hold removeable screened panels...maybe patio door screens.Dave
*Robert,Your screen design is very dependent on the overall design of the porch.Do you have a preliminary design (picture, drawing) you could post? Railings, posts, walls, general architecture you want to match?Do that and I'm sure there will be some (helpful) responses. We won't even ask for royalties on the ideas you use, or will we?
*Check out the availability of Pella rollscreens which might be adaptable to your needs. Or go see a good awning guy and have them advise you on what they have to offer. It would be more "industrial". Personally I like Beckmans idea if you could assure simplicity and no beheadment if she comes undone. Best of luck.

I'm not a big fan of screened in front porches but I am even less of a fan of biting bugs! One idea I have thought of is using the roll type screens used to screen in a garage door. I've seen the ads before but do not recall where.
