Got a call from from some clients the other day , asked if i would ”design and build” them a detached garage. ( In my world, this means we have no plans and your a carpenter, this is what you do, right.LOL!) They have a nice stucco home in a nice sub. with an approx. 8 /12 hipped roof. The house already has a attached garage which opens to the side.
The new garage will be built at the end of the drive facing the street and will not be attached to the house, about 10ft away.(Used to store/work on a race car.) My question is how important is the pitch of the roof on the garage to keep things looking right? Would a lesser pitched gable roof look bad since the garage and house are so close together?
The only request the homeowners gave was a approx. 24×24 stucco garage and within a budget, which seems o.k. These are great clients that I have worked for several times and I want this to look right.
I could use help with designing, so toss your ideas and experience at me please!
Thanks

yo dug, which the hell dug are you?
Hip, whether the same pitch or not. Same looks good, easily cheat with a 6/12.
Anything else will look like a kit garage-stuccoed............
but then again, that's just my uninformed opinion here in NW OH.

Hey Calvin, Im the one in Ga. IIRC you live /work around Toledo. You ever heard of the Libby house in the old west end.I think its on some kind of historical registry.Anyways, thats my father in laws house.
Thanks for the reply on the roof, thats why I come here!
Libby House. Not sure if I recall that one exactly but Libby was the guy that came up with the machine blown glass that put this town on the map. Must be quite the shanty. There's some beauty's in the neighborhood.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

If the existing house is a hip, I would go with a hip for the garage. Is there going to be any useable space over the garage ceiling? I agree with Calvin taht with a hip roof you can get away with a little more fudging of the roof slope.

None requested, but considering the use for the garage this would be a good idea.
I would either match the existing as closely as possible, or do a completely different design.
Even though they asked for a freestanding garage, I would consider adding a covered sidewalk between the two garages.

Great idea, but unfortunately theres a grade issue and a retaining wall that I'd have to contend with.
If youi like this, I could probably jpeg or pdf some of the drawings to you. I think the size was a little smaller
