Hello to All!
My question is… has anybody ever framed and flashed a roof hatch at the peak of a roof? My roof is a 7 in 12 and I thought I might have the hatch straddle the ridge line. Roof trusses are on 24″ centers, which should be plenty wide for the hatch and decking is plywood. Any flashing issues I should worry about, such as snow accumulation on top of or around the opening( I’m located in Northern VA)? Any ideas would be appreciated!

I haven't had the need to install one OVER the peak, but a couple of years ago, I had one made up and I installed it just off the peak so a local TV station could mount and maintain a weather cam on the roof.
I had a sheetmetal shop build the flashing and hatch from stainless, and then I installed the unit not unlike doing a skylight. The hatch lid overlays the rim of the hatch and sits down on marine weather stripping and is secured with adjustable cam-lock latches.
The installation is on a large house on a coastal headland and gets major weather. So far, all is good.
Simple basic flashing details. No problem there but it would look ugly, IMO
How about disguising it as a cupola on a hinge?

. . . . or as a chimney.
Greg.
Try to avoid having a roof hatch if at all possible. They're ugly, they leak, they're another opening that burglars can use. We had one on the old Four Star Theater, it was nothing but grief. Why not access the roof using a ladder?

Why would they leak John?
isn't that like saying, "All shylights leak" or "all basements leak" or paint always blsiters off.
Should we not use any skylights or paint and never try to put finished rooms in a basement?
Surely you meant, "If a hatch isn't really well flashed, it can leak, are you sure you want to take the chance?"
I still love ya but one bad hatch does not ruin a chickens carreer!
;).
