Roof Rafter Eave Details – New and Existing
I am adding on to my existing home. The existing portion built in the 40’s has a 4:12 hipped roof framed with 2×4 roof rafters at 24″ OC. The new portion matches the existing, but with codes nowadays, 2×8 @ 24 OC rafters will be required. I want to keep the ceiling heights the same throughout the house, which are already just at 8′-0.
Assuming the wall top plates remain at the same height throughout, how will the new 2×8 rafters sit on the top plates without adding a soffit at my interior wall corners to cover the bottoms of the 2x8s? Will the 2x8s get cut down to a 2×4 at the top plate? What is typically done to match 2×4 rafter construction with newer 2×8 rafter construction?
I am thinking that using roof trusses may be the way to go to eliminate this problem.
Thanks in advance for your responses.
