What type of sheathing. Nothing less than 1/2". What is your roofing.
*Johnnie, I won't use anything less than 5/8" ply for shingles. Tile I'd use 3/4". Most in my area use 1/2" OSB but I don't like it.Mike
*I may not be an expert, But there's no way I would even consider 1/2" even on 16 o.c. I even feel that 5/8 is pushing it for 24 o.c. I was just on my sister's roof which is 1/2 over 24". You could have a great skateboarding run up there. I'll tell you, I'd rather have something solid over my head.
*Do you guys use H-Clips. 1/2 is the norm here for roofs. I have even seen a roof that they used 3/8" on. Scary to walk on.
*If I remember right Johnnie is on the Florida coast where all they use is 1/2". I use 5/8" an dgenerally have my rafters @ 16"oc. Johnnie there is a debate on this as long as your arm someplace in the archives.
*1/2" osb on 24" oc rafters suits me fine. I lived in a house for 20 years that had 3/8" ply on 24 " centers (no clips in those days)and no felt. Even with Michigan snow loads, I never had a problem. It's now holding a second layer of 25 yr shingles for five years now. No problem. So, given the track record, I'd reccomend solid 2x12' laid flat, t and g them. Place your rafters on 6" oc. Six layers of felt. Four layers of ice and water. Then, two layers of 30 year shingles.Thats my minimum now....as long as your paying.blue
*we always use 5/8 on 2 foot centers... with h-clips1/2 with clips on 16" centers..save money? use the 1/2... me.. i'll use the 5/8... to each his own...
