Any opinions out there on roof sheathing? I am installing 2X4 sleepers on top of existing roof deck to add insulation and venting. I will need to cover the 2X4s with a decking. I’m considering 7/16ths OSB with clips, two layers of 7/16ths OSB, 1/2″ plywood with clips, 5/8ths plywood. Each choice in order obviously goes up considerably in price. Details of roof… New York snow area, 16″ O.C., 5/12 slope, Architectural shingles will be used. I’d like the most cost effecient without compromosing strength.

you're going to get a lot of different opinions on whats best here. i live in upstate new york and we use 5/8's with clips. you could go with advantec, but were it my house i wouldn't want to spend the money, though i believe it to be a superior roof sheating product in many circumstances, and well worth the extra money spent.
You use 5/8" with clips with rafters @ 16" centers?Joe Carola
not if i'm trying to cut cost in any way possible, but we usually frame 5/8" 16oc. with conventional lumber and 5/8" 24oc with i joist. both clipped.
what about you?

I've never used clips before on 16" centers. We sheath with 5/8" and the only time I used clips was when I framed with trusses @ 24" centers and one time this past summer I stick framed a roof @ 24" centers.Joe Carola
5/8 Advantec, no clips
Jeez, for regular shingles, I've used 1/2" ply, no clips. Nail spacer between the sheets for expansion. Never had a problem, touch wood.
