Hello!
I’m hoping someone knows a surefire method for removing roof tar from a brick chimney. I recently recently remodeled my infant son’s bedroom and uncovered a nice looking brick chimney. I want to keep it exposed in the room, but it’s got some blackjack-type roof tar on it where someone had tried to flash an old roofline. I want to get this stuff off without caustic chemicals, and hopefully without a lot of dust. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

It can be tough - solvent will soak into the brick, wirebrushing makes dust. I would be tempted to go after it with a good two-handed carbide scraper while the spouse holds the vacuum nozzle close.
My master bath chimney (1886) was plastered and showed a different roofline; we just chipped it all off and put saltillo tile sealer on it - it's been fine for ten years, but it wqas of a vernacular style and material that looked OK chipped up. Great to lie in the tub by the fire!

Try a non petroleum based hand cleaner.

Make it VERY COLD then nip and chip it a flake at a time

Maybe use the "spray freeze" stuff used for diagnosing electronic parts?

Hello!
Thanks for all of your (fast!) responses. I think I''ll try the 'freeze and chip' method. It's pretty cold here in Pennsylvania right now, so I'll just leave the window next to it open all night. The baby is 12 months old now, so it's a good time for him to toughen up to the elements anyway!

It's only satisfying if you eat it.
Sure, what took you so long to start him off on the road to Sparta?I don't think an open window will be cold enough though. I'm thinking below zero

I was just funnin--seems as though a direct shot with a refridgerant is in order. Thanks again!
I like the freeze method combined with a chipper hammer drill. Looks like you might have to do it the nasty way! You might have to use the grinding method.
I ain't gonna do it at all. I'll hire it out to axemann to take care of.That grinder dust will help build callouses on his kids lungs too. Toughen him up for chemical warfare.

I never said it was goung to be PURDY!
piffin told you a great way.... I've done it with a CO2 bottle (welding supply) (the same type they use for your beer or soft drink tap... or mig welding if you don't mind the splatter) with gloves to hold the hose you can blast it dead on with co2 and it will freeze fast then chip... it will pop off quick.... and leave very little behind... I'd stay away from anything that makes it soft ..you'll just have a nasty black mess... even without freeze'n i'd chip & scrape before i'd try to melt it in anyway...
