We just spent a week in London and nearby and I never saw one tab shingle asphalt or fiberglas roof. All the roofs looked like clay tiles but it’s hard to believe they would have used such a heavy material. There may have been some of that corrugated ashpalt roofing that has become available here and perhaps there was simply that in more styles. I don’t even recall much metal roofing, esp. standing seam which used to be common around here.
Anyone know what it was I was looking at over there. Not many building supply stores in the tourist areas of London.

This might surprize you. the tiles you were looking at are made of concrete. They are installed over wood strips as they have small tabs at the back of the top edge. every third row is nailed. Warrantied for 100 years. Installation is a real workout!

What???
Are these something new to you guys???
*Here's a site which had a discussion about an English thatched roof. The owner claimed that the aphid poop from the overhanging neighbor's tree was aggravating his wife's respiratory problems. Law suits back and forth. Local government involved, historic issues.http://www.oak-wood.co.uk/uktc/

The roofing material you saw were probably either clay tiles or gray slate. The tiles are a cheaper option (I'm typing this under them right now)but for my money welsh slate is far beter looking.
Over here in the UK we've never had ceder/wooden shingles as far as I know.Asphelt is reserved for garden sheds and tempory out-buildings. While over in KC.MO.this year I saw several tile roofs maybe it has alot to do with hurricanes and tornadoes etc
