Rosen paper was used to protect treads of new oak staircase during construction. Unfortunately, some areas got wet and have stained the oak badly.
Other than sanding out-starting w/ 40 grit paper today- have others had success using chemical “bleaching” agents to speed up stain removal? If so, what was used. Oak finish is to be natural w/ poly, so it is important that chemical will not discolor finish desired.
Lastly, any succcess using other flooring protection products for future new installations that don’t leave gummy residue to clean up, but allows safe traction for crews walking. Thanks.

FB, I think it's oxalic acid that helps take water stains out of oak. If you do a search of the archives I'm pretty sure this was discussed in the last year or so.
To protect treads, or any floor, I like to lay down two layers of rosin paper, attached at the edges with blue tape, then 1/8" masonite with any seams sealed with duct tape. The masonite is easy to score and snap when you need to, and keeps tears and moisture off the rosin paper.
A recent suggestion in FHB was to use those colorful interlocking rubber mats sold for playrooms...as a onetime investment, I'm considering it....
*father buff -Click here to see Pro-Tect Products Inc. as advertised in FHB - they carry some of the best protective materials we've ever used.Jeff
*Protection from pro-tect is a standard overhead item for me.
*father... if the treads are oak..you can try some of the bleaches.. try a good paint store.. but also think about a light red based stain to "enhance" the warmth of red oak ( and disguise the reddish stains of the rosin paper)... a lot of the oak treads are white oak but most people prefer the reddish tones to the harsher tones of the white..so you may want to toy with that idea...this could be an oil stain like Minwax... or experiment with a poly stain/finish
