Rotozip

xhammerandnailsx | Posted in Tools for Home Building on December 29, 2003 02:03am

At Home Depot, I found a Rotozip on clearance for $26 bucks. Only problem is that it is missing the spindle and base for the top. I checked the rotozip website and they don’t have any info about a kit to fix this. Anyone have any info as to where to purchase one? I haven’t bought the Rotozip yet, because I’m going to haggle the price down by the cost of the spindle.

Thanks,

Wes

My advice..don't buy it. I know of 4 count em..4 that have a problem where the fan inside freewheels on the shaft and slides until it hits part of the houseing making a whale of a racket and chewing up the fan.

Get ANY other brand if ya really need one, or a laminate trimmer with an 1/8 collet adapter.

Don't buy it.  Go to Sears and buy the Craftsman version.  It comes with case, circle cutter, plunge base and more, all for $59.  You can't beat it and the motors amps and rpms are identical to Rotozip.

Thanks for the replies. I'll be checking into the Craftsman as soon as I need to head to Sears.

Does anyone have any others they like? It will mostly be used for cutting can light holes.

if all you are going to use it for is cutting out can light holes you may be better served with a circle cutter ( any drywall supplier will have one ) or you could just chuck a bi metal hole saw into your cordless and have at it.

We have a circle cutter for remodel cans. I'm looking for a cut out tool for new cans.

I bought the DeWalt cut out tool from Lowes for around $90.  This being after I called them and was told they would have to special order it for $110.  Anyway, I really like it, I've used it to cut through floor tile, composite floor board, plywood, dry-wall.  It came with a circle cutter, side handle and an adjustable depth attachment.

If you plan on doing a lot cut outs I recommend spending the money on this tool.

if I was any smarter I might be dangerous.

Watch out Scott, there's some of DeWalt basher's around here that can never let a good word about DeWalt go unchallenged.

Me, I like the Dewalt tools I own, except for the random orbit sander. Returned it, and the one it was replaced with, developed the same problem.

But then I also own a Ford and was tickled to see Matt Kenseth win the Winston Cup......................

I hope you weren't referring to me when you mentioned Dewalt bashers---I said nothing bad about Dewalt.  Only that Rotozip had been bought by Bosch and in general they have excellant tools.  I would buy Bosch over Sears any day.  I own some Dewalt stuff---nice radio/charger---would like the 18v cordless drill/circular saw better if the damn batteries were easier to get in and out.  Seems like after a lot of use, they kind of stick--the release buttons don't want to work.  And I'm kind of a Chevy guy---you know--the Hendrick racing team--Gordon/Johnson.

Rotozip was recently (sometime in the past year) purchased by Bosch--they have upgraded even the basic Rotozip to 3-jaw chucks from 1/8" collets.  I'm sure Bosch has taken care of the other problems---I don't think they want a poorly designed tool as part of their lineup.  So unless you think Bosch tools are garbage, then I would stay away from Sears (who knows who makes their stuff anymore)

Did someone here say Crapsman in the same breath as Home D poop?

Personally I love my Rotozip and havent ever had a problem with it.......A small router is a good choice as well but my Roto zip has gotten me outta a whole lotta fixes......

Be ,,,,,,heyyyyyy.who had that Rotozip issue from HD a ways back   : )   ?
