Got a gift certificate from Tool Crib for helping out my in-laws and I’m thinking about the PC 7518 3-1/4 HP 5-speed. I did search the archives and only found a negative comment regarding the locking adjustment.
Intent is for a good, heavy-duty all-purpose machine that will mostly (but not always) be used under a table (so the plunge version isn’t appropriate).
Any up-to-date suggestions regarding this model / performance etc.? I’m looking to buy in the next day or two.
Thanks,
Jeff Clarke

Good router. A classic. Lots of aftermarket locking gadgets too (see the thread on plunge routers)
*Real good router. Very heavy. Definately use under table if at all possible, if not it's a great workout.
*Thanks - I have a old POS Craftsman for light duty work, but this will be general-purpose for a woodshop, plus I need it now to run a 3/4" dia. beading bit, which judging from the OA length (3") is going to take some HP to run. Weight is 14 + lbs - I figured the double loop handle was a hint - 'hold on' for non-table work. It's ordered - thanks again.
*jeff, i use the plunge version of that router almost every day! its a great, smooth running machine---i even run a HUMONGEOUS 1-1/2" triple roundover bit in it (thats where the variable speed is really important!)the only thing i do not like about it is how hard it is to plunge, or in your case set while under a table. I had it in a router table and blew out my plastic insert trying to set the depth.of course that may just be due to improper maintainance--it wasn't like that when i bought it five years ago.also seems i've seen a little crank thing for it so that may be the answer.hope my info helps gabe
*Gabe, Rockler has those cranks and I believe that Toolcrib also has them somewhere buried in their catalog.
*Jeff:7518 is best table compromise, see 7518 etal, for more on it and its competitors.
*Thanks again for all the advice - it's a fine machine. My first use was freehand routing a 3/4" bead (large bearing bit) which was a lot easier than I thought it would be. The soft-start practically eliminates starting torque. I didn't mind the weight at all - it actually seemed like an advantage. Can't wait to get it under a table.
