I am new here and I really enjoy reading all the different discussions. I work for a small building/remodeling company in North Texas. I have a question, and maybe someone has the answer. Ipicked up a used P/C 7518 router and the softstart went out.Iwas looking through woodcraft and saw a router speedcontrol, since mine is single speed I would like to use it. It’s cheaper than new P/C parts. Thanks for the help.

Hey rodnic,
I have one that I picked up from mlcswoodworking.com I am not really impressed with it, or any of them. First you cant really tell what rpm the router is turning, secondly they can be rather jerky when not under load, and thirdly I think it is still up for debate whether they can do damage to the router motor. As to whether It would work with your machine and take the place of the soft start I kind of doubt it because when I have used it on my older PC 690, it didn't soft start.
I think for a machine of that quality I would go ahead and find a service center. Here in Charleston WV. My Black and Decker/Dewalt now services all brands. Perhaps you have a similar service center in your town.
I hope this helps,

I used to use the speed control with my big routers because I didnt have variable speed. Now that I have variable speed I wouldnt go back to the speed control!
Like the other poster said, its not a real even running machine with the speed control. I dont care for it at all and wouldnt recomend one if you can avoid it.
How much difference $$$ are we talking about?
OTOH, I've used one for several years and was able to do OK with it but....

I hate to break it to ya but the router speed control may cause your motor to wear out before its time. its more of a rheostat which will put a undue strain on your motor .
Plus it will probably cost lots of $$$ to get it repaired with a factory part.
get the quote for the repair and if its worth it. Get it repaired or buy a new one.
