question: I am an owner/builder who didn’t get my roof on before the winter rain
& snow, and my OSB subfloors (2 story) took a beating for about 2 months. As a
result, I have been having squeaks show up on a consistent basis because of
rusting nails. Short of taking up and replacing all the nails, is there anything
else I can do? Would it help if I soaked each nail with WD-40 or would that
affect whatever integrity is left? It is almost time to get our permanent
flooring down, and I don’t want to be finding & fixing squeaks then. Thanks very
much for your help.

I would leave the nail alone and run screws in along side them.
*Screws are a good idea but don't use drywall screws. The heads may snap off over time (or even during installation). The metal is brittle. Use softer steel wood screws or screws made for subfloor connections.Your squeek problem probably has nothing to do with rust on the nails. Wood swells / wood shrinks / .... Next time use construction adhesive on each joist before setting subfloor. One trick I just tried on a squeeky floor was to shim the subfloor up from the underside with a flatbar and squeeze in adhesive between joist and sheathing. Then release faltbar. Stay off floor for a day and no more squeeks. Still good after a month.Very messy process. Wear a hat - I didn't and had to get a crew cut.
*John,I haven't "nailed" a subfloor in years. We always use 1 1/8" T&G "sturdy floor". We glue and screw the piss out of it. Never had a problem....until you have to take it up for a change order.Ed. Williams
*OSB on a subfloor. Never touch the stuff myself.Screws alongside the nails sound like the way to go. A more costly alternative might be to layer sheets of 1/2 ply over the OSB and screw thru the whole sandwich.I'd use a slip sheet, like red rosin paper between them if you do. If your almost up to the finish flooring I guess it's probably to late for that anyway.
*Believe it or not John, all those squeaks can be traced to the offending nails.Pull the offending nails, until you don't squeak any more. The screw the floor down with flooring compatible screws.you'll be glad you did, until your teenage daughter manages to sneak home without waking you up someday!blue
