The discussions in this forum about licensing and work with and without licensing is essentially talking about saving the homeowner from himself. The theory is that the homeowner shouldn’t be allowed to contract with unlicensed people, or do certain work because his conduct is dangerous to himself and other occupants of his house. We wandered around to joining topics but this was the central point.
Well, the other day I was walking down the street and saw a homeowner “improving” his house. He was adding decks, fence, shed, etc. When I looked at it I saw he had achieved the near impossible. In fact I have only seen this level of achievement once before. That was with a framing sub I hired several years ago.
This man is totally unfamiliar with the concepts of “flat”, “straight”, “level”, “plumb”, or “vertical”. In fact his walls and fenceline looks like a western diamond-back making his way through the desert.
Other than being something that will detract from his property values and maybe those of his neighbors I suppose there is no harm. But, should I help save him from himself? Or, should I just nod my head sagely, mumble something and pass on?
