A tangent in another thread mentioned bamboo scaffold in China. Rather than hijack that thread even further than I did, thought I’d post a picture of it here. Taken in 98. Common sight in all of their cities on projects large and small. Saw it on 30 story buildings. Pretty amazing.

I bet done right, it's a safe and sturdy system. Can you imagine osha checking out something like it? Do you have any close ups of the joinery? And maybe some stats on workplace accidents? Seems I remember some reports of collapse during construction of a building in the far east recently. That is, the building collapsed, not the staging. Whatsay? got anymore info on this?
*>Do you have any close ups of the joinery? This pict was from a moving bus. I'll check my photos, but I was there for a different reason (adopting my daughter) so construction methods were an afterthought. :)>And maybe some stats on workplace accidents? In China? Doubtful.>Seems I remember some reports of collapse during construction of a building in the far east recently. That is, the building collapsed, not the staging. Whatsay? got anymore info on this?Tempting to say that the building fell but the scaffold stayed upright, but that'd just be as a joke. All I can say for sure is that I saw a lot of really nice, hard working people, and a lot of really precious little girls.
*Congratulations on the addition to your family. Girls are precious. Post a pic proud papa.
*Jim K,I only got a close up look at the bamboo scaffolding at one job site. An old building was being remodeled into a disco/nightclub. A new facade was going up outside that was nearly 50' high. The bamboo scaffolding was put together with nylon zip ties at the joints! Six guys were crawling around the outside putting on new stucco details and painting. A few of the workers were barefoot. The adjoining building space on the first floor was a small grocery/variety store with customers coming and going, walking under the scaffold. No signs or any type of warnings, no overhead protection. The conditions inside the nightclub were even more unbelievable. A spider box on the floor had maybe 20 extension cords plugged in which were running lights and power tools. It was so dark inside you could hardly see. Six or eight guys were cutting black granite with Makita skilsaws while a helper would pour water along side the saw. Amost directly overhead welders were fabricating an new balcony over the dance floor(where the granite was going down). Electricians (?) were pulling wire jumping from beam to beam. Carpenters were installing a huge soffit assembly over the new bar using pull saws and pneumatic nailers--no miter box or hammers in site. Over in the corner a worker was mixing what looked like thinset on the floor with a shovel. The nightclub was to open in two weeks.
*I first saw bamboo scaffold in Taiwan. It was all wired together. They also used it for supporting billboards.
*>Girls are precious. Post a picLast week and the first day in China...
*I hear that after they break the scaffolding down, they make chop sticks out of the bamboo. Not only are those asian folks hard working, but they don't waste a thing ;^)
*Now there's a sweetheart. You and the wife I'm sure a happy as clams. Enjoy.
*Very beautiful, Jim. You better cherish her, or else. :)
*Yeah, what he said.Rich Beckman
