i’m replacing all the posts on my screened in porch and putting in new double doors.
one of the issues with the existing structure is that the 4×4 pt posts are twisted and cause the existing door/jamb to be out of plumb and stick, not to mention that it’s falling apart anyway.
my question is: is there a type of post (i was thinking of laminated something) that i can use that i can count on being straight TILL I DIE, or close to it? btw i may use the posts as the jamb, and the “sill” is brick.
thanks

How bout wrapping the 4x4 in 1x material slightly larger than the post? That way it wont matter if it twists. Or maybe a round steel post also wrapped in 1x material.
4x4 cedar or fir.
The cedar around here I pick from a fence installer. Not all good but some are sweet. About 12-15 bucks for a 8 footer.
Fir, rough sawn / s4s are usually nice and straight-way more per ea.

Clear cedar 4x4. Not cheap - maybe $35-40 each, but well worth the money.

Not sure of your vertical structural needs, but I have made hollow 4x4 posts with (4) pieces of true 1" thick CYP, with a lock miter at the corners. Cut the lock miters (kind of a bevel with a bump) with a router, smear glue, slide 'em together, pin it with some nails, and they don't seen to twist.
HD sells 1" thick SYP stair treads; you can rip and straighten two lengths from a piece of that.

thanks for replying.,
what's cyp or syp?i was thinking of laminating some of the new "fake" wood products but wasn't sure of the strength
cyp is clear yellow pine - just a grade of syp with no knots; syp is southern yellow pine - easy to get in my area and nice to work with.

Clear heart KD redwood (thanks Zak!). How much equity do you have in that house - you're going to need it if you go this route!
i'm going to cover the posts with 1x material and paint that's really beautiful though.
Till you die? . . . . HOw old are you? LOL!
as if you don't know what i mean! lol
